The Holy Bible and Paradise Lost
Surely there are exceptions
but in the main, higher criticism of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" is
produced by scholars who read that Epic poem with as much spiritual
understanding as they employ in reading The Holy Bible which is to
say, "None!" For many years, these two works of
God's inspiration have been treated largely as fiction and myth.
The discerning reader of Paradise Lost has no trouble understanding that Mr. John Milton is a modern-day prophet giving a clear account of Creation to the modern world. In the world of secular publications, The Bible and Paradise Lost are beacons of spiritual enlightenment. Discerning readers will notice that God the Father gives particular heed to the precisely worded prayers that John Milton makes as part of his Epic.
Modern scholars who delve into spiritual literature should not make the Soul-killing mistake of thinking their studies are exercises applied to fictional inventions of poetic mysticism. "The Word of God is alive and sharper than any two-edged sword."
God the Father is mild and longsuffering. He has been mistaken for a fiction more than once. His inexhaustible Providence of inspiring literary information are treated as subjects of mere curiosity more often than not.
Secular scholarship has a tenured and respected place in to-day's world. But those times are passing. Things change. The wise should read The Holy Bible and Paradise Lost for the accurate history and prophecy they contain. Skepticism is proper in the study of common literature. The Holy Bible and Paradise Lost are not common literature.
