Atomic Jesus Supernaturalist
Science, Theology & God
At the moment of this writing in July 2002, the gathering of knowledge about the natural world is assumed by most people to be a "scientific" pursuit. But after 500 years of meticulous scientific inquiry, are the extreme complexities of the natural world any better understood? It's flattering to think so but the answer must be, "No." Modern gadgetries and medical luxuries produced in the past 500 years give the human creature its comfort. But humanity's precise comprehension of the physical Earth and its universe is as elusive as ever.
No amount of scientific investigation has ever produced a conclusive, scientific answer for WHY AND HOW the existence of anything should be as it is. The scientific brush-off of this basic question ought to be a tip for the observant layman. The childish questions, "Why am I here? How did I get here?" have never been satisfactorily answered by any scientific means.
A theologian's deep conviction cannot convince a skeptical scientist that "god" exists. God? An almighty creator? An individualized, supremely intelligent entity possessing absolute power and total Sovereignty over every single thing in the sky and on the ground? Don't be absurd!
The vineyard of scientific thought is choked with skepticism. Rigorous methods of scientific inquiry demand hard proof before anything can be accepted as "the truth." Mere faith (according to the scientific canon) is not enough to allow for the supernatural being and presence of an entity (theologians claim) powerful enough to create planet Earth and its universe. Skepticism keeps many from comprehending a simple fact: that it is God who proves what men are made of, not the other way 'round.
Disdain of Almighty God is a symptom of hubris. Hubris is the pride of man. Hubris at its worst leads to the stone-hearted belief that there is nothing superior to the power of human reason. Hubris can shrivel the imagination and leave the godless intellectual standing alone, comparing everything he sees with himself.
Scientists speak of "truth" as though an understanding of "truth" were possible through a detailed examination of many different facts. There are many kinds of facts about many different things but there is only One Truth from which all factual information is finally derived. "I AM the truth. I AM the way. I AM the life. No man comes to the Father [God] except through me." This conclusive statement-of-fact about the Absolute Character of The Truth was dropped into the stream of earthly history by a man whose name is known everywhere on Earth: Jesus of Nazareth. The choice that such a statement demands is agonizingly simple: believe it or not. The extreme egoism and audacity of this amazing statement is taken as a personal affront by many people from all walks of life.
Living on planet Earth is by no means a "scientifically perfect" experience. Wherever people are, mistakes abound. Scientific study and inquiry are no exception. Quality control cuts down on errors and failure but in the final analysis, search for "perfect scientific truth" is inconclusive. In the scientific view, "truth" is seen as an ever-increasing array of factual details. All the best scientific facts money can buy amounts to a lot of tantalizing, inconclusive, contradictory information. Scientific information is as tantalizing, contradictory, and inconclusive as any of this world's theology.
Choosing to believe and boldly say that God Himself is a non-existent phantasm of human imagination, is a choice. Those who choose to deny God flirt with blasphemy and Soul-destruction. In the final analysis, God is not science. God is not theology. God is God.
